Definitely some typo there. It should be: Anh ấy có nói (thì) tôi mới biết chuyện ấy. Literally translated as: I only knew about that story after he had told me/ I only knew about that story right after he told me. Another example would be: Tôi mới về nhà thì trời bắt đầu mưa (It started to rain just after I got home).

This is a tough one. I can't come up with an exact English translation. To me, an equivalent sentence in English is "I only know it because he said it." Mới is equal to "only" in my sentence. Mới usually means new but not in this context.
