A lot of people associate the word routine to something boring and repetitive. “ I don’t like my job because I always do the same thing.” I remember saying this to my supervisor before, and he answered me, “ All jobs are routine, even the ones you perceive as exciting will become a chore eventually, without routine, there is no mastery and there is no control.” I thought about what he said and years after I realized the importance of routine. If I don’t have daily, weekly or even monthly routines and repetitive habits, I would have not developed skills that are necessary for my job.
I used to think that being a professional athlete is something far more exciting than teaching. That was my way of thinking until I saw how the “champions” train. They have a routine job as well. They wake up at 4 am to have an 8-mile run, at 12 noon they will have heat training, after that, they go to the gym and have strength training. The time, and schedule changes, but they do these things repetitively. A professional model easily sashays in the runway, but we do not know how many times she practiced that confident walk. A seasoned actress has routines as well, maybe different from a regular person like us, but it is a fact that they do have routines.
Change is important but routine is also important, without the routines we do, we cannot adapt to change.
