I will add that the problem isn't necessarily non natives correcting texts. You can be a native and have terrible grammar or spelling skills. Just like you can be a non native but know the language back to front and be better at correcting than the native speaker. Maybe people should rate corrections which reflects back on a total rating for that person correcting the entries...although the downside to this is, some people just love to downvote or give negative feedback, so someones time and effort may be wasted.

Unfortunately, there are bad corrections by well-meaning non-native speakers, non-native English teachers, and even native speakers.

Additionally, very few native speakers teachers contribute any more. Too much work and very few thank yous (which is another topic which comes up periodically).

So, the posters get what they get.

As a comment about downvoting, after I corrected a certain non-native English teacher's corrections, he blocked me and now I can't downvote his incorrect corrections.

Brian, I don't think it should surprise you that this topic comes up every so often. One of the curious features about this situation is that, although there are a number of highly proficient non-native English speakers on the site, they tend to be reticent about making corrections, citing their lack of familiarity with the nuances of English usage.

On the other hand, learners with a much lower level of English show no such inhibition and, to confuse matters further, people on the site who claim to be native speakers but evidently are not, also throw in their often inadequate contributions. Some of these people even teach English on this site.

If you come across an unsatisfactory correction I suggest you downvote it ; this should indicate to the poster that a concern has been raised by an independent observer. Beyond this, there is not a lot to be done, short of writing your own correction to every deserving notebook entry.

There should be a rating scale like 1-5 for each corrections rather than just up/down votes. This rating credit should be highlighted on the user's profile so people would know they are good at what they do irrespective of being a native or non native.

As long as you can see that they are not native speakers, it's fine (although I would never correct English posts), but there were some cases where people pretended to be native speakers, but they were clearly not. I guess it is too difficult to check for italki the language ability of all members. There was one guy who pretended to be a German native speaker who liked correcting posts of girls/women. After pointing out some mistakes native speakers clearly would never make, he left, but as a good-bye present he was swearing at me a lot in faulty German in several private messages.
