I didn't find Remembering the Kanji boring, I guess it depends on the person.*shrug* :)

I find it very handy as reading subtitles and such is now so much easier, and often I can guess the word by knowing the meanings of the kanji.

I forgot to mention one thing though, if you learn them in this way it will only help you how to WRITE and recognize the kanji.So if that's the daunting part for you, it could be helpful.

If you diligently study 20-30 a day you can be finished in like 2-4 months (unless you are an overachiever with RSI and have to start over everytime you hit 1700 frames lol. *points at self* -_-).

To learn the on/kunyomi you will need to look at other resources or, like Der Terminator mentioned you can learn the readings by learning words (which is what I do aside from RTK).

Anyway, this is why I mentioned the sample pdf. After 200 or so kanji you'll probably have a good idea whether you love or hate the method :D

Yeah, both books are pretty awesome. But I still found them too boring to read from cover to cover. See, Kanji is meaningless on its own. It has too many meanings, too many pronunciations, it's just a pain. Which is why I prefer to learn words as a whole. You stumble upon a new word, you learn its Kanji, just like you learn the spelling of new English words you encounter, instead of memorising this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_orthography#Combinations_of_vowel_letters.

My favourite way to learn kanji is the book Remembering the Kanji by Heisig, in combination with the website Reviewing the Kanji ( google "kanji koohii") where you can easily make flashcards for reviewing.

The book teaches you how to remember kanji through mnemonics and thinking up lively stories for each kanji. It also shows you how to write them.

For instance, take 休, which has the keyword "rest". The keyword for the thing on the left is "person" ( I named my person Chuck Norris), the thing on the right (木) is a "tree". So you can make a story like: Chuck Norris doesn't rest against a tree! The tree RESTS against Chuck Norris!

And BA-BAM! Another kanji learned :D

You know... In my way help a lot Basic Kanji book. It's very cool book where explain how to write kanji and how better to remember. Also there are a lot of excersises that will help you to remember all better. Book have 2 parts. After it you will know 500 kanji. If you want you may give me your email and I will send this to you.
