It works for me, anyway. It's all about the amount of exposure to me, and I've learned a lot of words and expressions from songs. You can't exactly talk in song lyrics but repeatedly listening to songs is a good way to memorize words and grammar constructions. As a beginning student of English I frequently used to remember some tense formations and ways to use prepositions because they were associated with a certain melody I knew well.
