A chat room with thousands of people chatting at the same time is not useful.  There is too much text coming into the screen in those cases.  A forum is better.

There are discord channels for most language learners to go to where there is Text, Voice, and (now) Video Chat.  I recommend looking for one for the language[s] you're learning and using them as a resource.

It would probably be flooded with lewd texts the second a verifiable female strolls in.

So probably not a good idea overall. Probably. 

Best way to find the Discord servers is to find the active language community for the language you're learning on Reddit and then add the server to Discord.  Most popular languages have a community there (French, Russian, German, etc.).

@ Ali: All you have to do is get an IRC client and log onto a popular IRC #Channel and see how unusable chat gets with a lot of active participants.  You actually don't need "thousands," just "dozens."  But how many people do you think will jam into the English, Chinese, French, or Spanish channels?

What is the purpose of chat, if the traffic is so high that it becomes practically unusable without resorting to direct messages?
