AP Spanish Language and Literature in One Year? Hola a todos, I am re-writing a post here that did not get a response for me on the forum College Confidential and I am hoping that there will be Spanish students here that can answer my query. Hello, My passion is languages— I’ve spent the last five years of my life delving deeply into the topic and discovering Latin, French, Spanish, and Chinese. I took Latin I, II (did some advanced lessons that year too), III (began teaching myself to SPEAK the language that year), Literature (covered the now defunct Catullus and Horace AP syllabus), and self-studied for AP Latin and got a 5 in 2019, the same year I attended a spoken Latin seminar where participants sign an oath to speak Latin for a whole week. French was entirely self-studied, but I had great success. In a year, I studied everything from the present tense to some literary excerpts and the imperfect subjunctive. I’m taking the AP French Language and Culture Exam in a few short weeks. Now, I begin to think about next year. My Chinese is basic and an AP is most certainly out of the question. The local college does not offer Latin and will cease to offer French in 2021, the same year I enter college. I want to major in Spanish and have a certain energy for the language I’ve never even felt before right now. I hired a tutor from Guatemala, we have spoken numerous times on upper level subjects, and I’m beginning to watch Spanish films. We talked about the idea of studying for the AP exam. I have one year of high school left. I proposed that I take AP Spanish Language and Literature in one year. What do you all think? What are some good ways to study for the exams (besides writing emails and having conversations, as well as reading all 38 works of Spanish literature?)

OK, I think this is doable. Here's how I would approach it... 1: Put together some sort of structure for learning the grammar and acquiring the vocabulary, and set aside 30 min 5 days / week for this. I recommend Busuu or Lingvist, which are both basically dynamic textbooks that have apps and desktop versions. The Butterfly Spanish channel on YouTube has short, a la carte lessons addressing particular issues like ser vs. estar -- very good. Anki for flashcards, and for vocabulary, the Routledge Frequency Dictionary of the 5,000 most common words in Spanish (by Davies). 2: You need to gain comprehensible input through exposure to written language and listening (I would deprioritize speaking for the AP test... more info here: https://www.albert.io/blog/how-to-tackle-ap-spanish-language-informal-speaking/). For this, I love Lingq (check out Lingo Steve on Youtube), which is a platform that helps you efficiently work through natural texts and build up your vocabulary and knowledge of phrases. Finally, watch Extra (a show kind of like Friends but for Spanish learning) on YouTube and then add in music (the Lyrics Training app is cool for this) and movies with subtitles. There is so much amazing Spanish language film. 3. Finally, get an iTalki tutor you're comfortable with and meet at least once a month -- they will be able to let you know when you have made progress and guide you with your language learning strategy. Good luck! Brendan
