洛阳纸贵,literally it means the paper of Luoyang (洛阳) becomes expensive.
洛阳, Luo4 yang2, a famous ancient city in China, which is the capital of the Western Jin (西晋, xi1 jin4) Dynasty in this context.
纸, zhi3, paper.
贵, gui4, expensive or become expensive.
There was a brilliant literatus called Zuo Si (左思, zuo3 si1) living in the 西晋 period. He wrote a serie of fugues (赋, fu4, a featured literary form in China’s literature history ), which were integratively named San Du Fu (《三都赋》, san1 du1 fu4 ). His masterpiece were dramatically popular in 洛阳, and nearly all the people scrambled to copy 《三都赋》by hands for printing still didn’t come out. Due to excessive usage of paper in 洛阳, its price soon became several times more expensive than the usual. Therefore, this idiom has been using to describe one’s works are terribly welcome by the people.
