在中国送礼物

在中国，送客人小礼物非常重要。送礼物表示双方想加深他们的友谊。接收一个礼物最好用两手拿，相像收到名片一样。为什么这样，我不太清楚，但是我知道这是中国的风俗习惯。我还是也不清楚，当着主人的面前可不可以打开礼物，查看具体是什么。我知道，在中国送剑、剪刀等、手表、伞、绿帽子等东西会引起不好的作用。这也和中国的文化有关。

//手表倒还行，钟一般比较忌讳，因为送钟与送终谐音，后者means to see someone who's dying or already dead off.  绿帽子代表妻子和别人有私情

在中国，送客人小礼物是非常重要的。送礼物表示双方想加深他们的友谊。接收[一个份]礼物最好用两双手拿，相收到像交換名片一样。为什么这样呢? 我不太清楚，不过自但是我知道这是東方中国[not only in China] 的风俗习惯。我更还是不清楚是在，当主人的送礼者面前可不可以是否能打开礼物，查看看它具体是什么。我也知道，在中国送剑、剪刀等、利器, 鈡手表、伞、绿帽子等等的东西是忌物会引起不好的作用。这也是和中国的文文化有关。

The act of using two hands is to infer the receiver is of higher status; to show one's humility.  Of course if the social status of the giver is apparently much higher, then it is not done.  This would be an act of humilation on the part of the giver.

Swords, scissors are sharp objects.  They cut.  It is believed that the harmonious atmosphere would be cut.  Originally, they are dangerous objects for accidents can happen.

You can give wrist watches as gifts but not clocks.  Since clocks are 鈡, it is a homophone of 終 (final, the end).  To present/give a clock 送鈡 sounds like 送終 attend a funeral.  Here 送 means to accompany.  In other words, you wanted the reciever to die.

All these customs are not unique to Chinese but to all of East Asia or cultures strongly influenced by Chinese.  The Chinese language because of its heavy homophonic nature is highly symbolic and plenty of rebus floating around.  Thus fish must be served on propitious occassions.  魚=利, shrimp, 蝦 = 哈 = laughter.  

This is like in the Victorian times, sending flowers is actually a hidden message sent by lovers to each to express in a discrete way.

It is also a faux pas to open presents in front of the giver, even if both parties are alone in private. This is not to shame either side on the appropriateness of the gift.  Of course with an audience, it would be a start of gossip that either giver is too cheap or that the gift is too expensive to flaunt or worse still, to be construed as a bribe!  However, there is one exception.  Imperial gifts, either to the emperor or from the emperor is a public spectacle to all eyes.  This is to show others how loyal one is or to how one is favored by the emperor.

（PS：在中国，当主人的面不要打开礼物，这样不礼貌。）
