Allo stagno dei miei suoceri, le strolaghe sono andate per l'inverno.

Nevertheless this sentence don't sound so good, you can choose between a plain sentence: "Le strolaghe sono [arrivate allo]/[partite dallo] (my poor english doesn't let me understand if, with "are gone", you meen that they arrived or left) stagno dei mie suoceri per l'inverno (better "per svernare" (to winter))."; or, if you want to put the stress on your in-law's pond: "Nello stagno dei mie suoceri, le strolaghe sono arrivate/partite per svernare."

Trying to write something like, "At my in-law's pond, the loons are gone for the winter."

If it's a sort of poem it's fine to invert the order of complements, as you did; otherwise it's better to say: "Le straloghe sono andate allo stagno dei miei suoceri per (passare) l'inverno" or "Per l'inverno le straloghe sono andate allo stagno dei miei suoceri", which sounds more natural.
