What does HUNKER DOWN mean?

Hi! What does it mean to hunker down mean in general and in this precise context? Is to hunker down common? Thanks.

Because we do not really interact in class, some classes have online 'discussion boards' where we have to answer questions and talk about something the teacher assigns...that's what I have today.

<em>'hunker down' is a synonym of 'settle in', which means you stay in one place for a long time, for example: </em>John didn't know when his friend would come back, so he hunkered down on the bench and watched people walk by without much interest.

In this context can I translate "hunkering down" with living there for awhile? These cities are continuously listed as the best places for young people to live. Hunkering down in, or even just visiting, a place where the majority of the neighborhood shares your values, interests, and age, is super empowering.

Hello! Speaking as someone from the southern United States, I have most often heard the phrase "hunker down" used in the context of staying indoors and in one place during very bad weather. It is a phrase often used casually and not often heard in formal conversation. "We hunkered down in the living room and waited for the storm to pass."
