No particular kind... just "to work for others, be gainfully employed; to have a part-time job"

just like go to a restaurant to wash the dishes called 打工.
or go to a factory, a work don't need too much professional skill called 打工
go to office called 上班 （office work)

I agree with Jeff. 打工 is a word some people said informally, for example, chat to some friends "哥们儿， 听说你现在赚发了?" "哪里，就是一打工的"
" Buddy, I heard you run you own business now?"
"Not true, I am just a staff"
