Awoken/awakened

He was awoken by a noise.
I was awakened by the song of the birds.
Is there any difference between these two words? Awoken? Awakened? Can I switch them?

They are both a *little* old-fashioned. They are still fine but "woken" is used much more frequently than either in the past tense. "he was woken by...", "I was woken by..."

The present tense form most often used (probably 80-90% of the time) would be "woke <em>up"</em>

I wake up...

You wake up...

But <em>not</em> "I wake up by a noise"

A tricky verb really!

They are synonyms.

I think of these verbs as having slightly more meaning attached to them. Such as, he or she who has awoken or awaken has also come to realize something. However, that may just be my own interpretation because these words aren't frequently used.
