Dinner or Lunch? In the afternoon, at 12pm, I told my friend that I had already eaten dinner. She was surprised. It was too early to eat dinner! It was the time to have lunch. I was confused about it. I remembered that I had heard the word from the radio in which were used in the midday. So, I found the meaning of "dinner" in the dictionary and that means: main meal of the day, whether eaten at midday or in the evening. But my friend told me that the word "lunch" was a populer term in which used in many countries. Who can tell me how to use two words?

Dinner or Lunch?

At 12*1 in the afternoon, I told my friend that I had already eaten dinner. She was surprised. 'It was too early to eat dinner!' She told me.*2 It was lunch time. This left me feeling confused. I remembered that I had heard the word at midday on*3 the radio. So, I found the meaning of "dinner" in the dictionary and it means: main meal of the day, whether eaten at midday or in the evening. But my friend told me that the word "lunch" was a popular term in which is used in many countries. Who can tell me how to use two words?

Well done - 加油!- this piece is written very well ^_^

Lunch is usually the meal in the middle of the day 午饭 and dinner is usually the evening meal 晚饭 but some people might call lunch dinner.

*1 I would personally put this at the start of the sentence as I feel it sounds more natural here, and drop the pm/am.

*2 Could also say: She said

*3 we always hear things 'on the radio' even though I understand why you would say it came 'from the radio' this not correct.

I'm sure there are other places, but the north of England is one place where the midday meal is called "dinner" (and the evening meal is called "tea"). But most (by a long way) native English speakers call the midday meal "lunch" and the evening meal "dinner". I come from the north of England myself, so I've run into this amusing cultural impedance mismatch myself. :)

In the United States, dinner is usually considered to be the meal eaten in late afternoon or evening. Lunch is usually considered to be the second meal of the day. I think most people here would be confused about having dinner as early as 12pm.
