Kabul, the capital, was once called “ Little Paris of Central Asia", implying that Afghanistan was once a prosperous and free country. However, the good times did not last long. You’re writing is very good. Your use of “anyway” here is correct, but sounds informal. Using a phrase such as “in any case” or “at any rate” sounds a bit more appropriate to me.
