I guess it depends on who you are talking to. The best topics are those that interest your conversation partner. The weather is always acceptable. Inquiring about someones family is usually acceptable, but not always. Talking about someone's job is often acceptable, but not always. Current events are also good topics. In the category of unacceptable, it depends (again) on who you are talking with but it is best to avoid topics like sex, religion and politics.
