What's "run-ins" mean ? They 've had run-ins before.

A "run-in" is an encounter, probably under less than auspicious circumstances. I mean, it may have been unpleasant.

It is a quarrel, argument or less often, a fight. Also, if you say that someone had a run-in with the law, it means that person committed a crime and police arrested or at least tried to arrest him (or her).
