Chinese characters are composed quite logically.  You need to learn the radicals first.  See my entry for some examples.  This was the way I learnt my Chinese characters.

When my daughter learned to write characters, her teacher taught her some chant so that they can learn effectively. For example, 一人大，二人天；日月明，小大尖...... I have tried to teach my foreign friends to read and write by this way, I found it is very helpful. Good ways can effort halved,result doubled.
