Quando andavo a scuola, fino alla quinta elementare (grammar school) chiamavamo {maestro, maestra} chi ci insegnava; dopo abbiamo usato sempre {professore, professoressa}, cioe` dalle scuole medie inferiori (11 anni) fino all'universita`; abbreviazione ormai accettata nella scuola: 'prof' La mia personale opinione e` che piu` piccoli (= giovani) sono gli allievi e piu` bravo deve essere l'insegnante (che non vuol dire /sapere piu` cose/).

An insegnante usually teaches in middle or secondary schools (while for elementary schools we use maestro). Professore usually refers to Universities but sometimes people use the term for a secondary school environment as well.
