La gente or persone?
Why is it, in Italian, either 'la gente' or 'persone'. Which one is correct?

They are both correct; usage depends upon the context and the
meaning you want to express.

They are both correct to express a set of person.
"La gente" ("le genti", at plural, specially if not only in literary contest mean people of nations) is more generic and just a little more colloquial.
"Le persone" refers always to a group but gives a nuances of individuality.
"C'è molta gente" - I am not interested in the composition of the crowd, but only in the numbers it makes.
"Ci sono molte persone" - I could count and identify them.
Is it clear ? :-)
Anyway think to the nuance of meaning, in English, among folk, people, crowd and further synonymous.

Both...it depends
La gente è strana.
Le persone sono strane.
c'era troppa gente
c'erano troppe persone
La piazza era piena di gente
La piazza era piena di persone...
and so on..
in the cases ,and more , above listed : no difference
but "Gente" in other cases means :
Popolo, nazione: gente latina, gente germanica; popolazione, cittadini:
la nostra gente è laboriosa (il nostro "popolo" è laborioso) (.Our people are hardworking.) ;
non si può esprimere la stessa cosa ,dicendo: "le nostre persone sono laboriose" .
can not be expressed the same thing, saying :"le nostre persone sono laboriose" .
"è gente di mare" , secondo me è meglio di "sono persone di mare"
