Beginning of studying German
What are similarities and differences between German and English? Which language is harder? I have been studying English for many years. So i am not sure if it's easy to start to learn German. Thanks!

Hi xiaobalu,
while Toni is right that there are many grammar rules and exceptions to the rules in the German language, allow me to say something about life in Germany.
In the 1990s, many guest workers from all over Europe went to Germany. Most of them did not receive any kind of education regarding our language.
Many of these people have founded families in Germany. For example, you can find areas in Berlin or Hamburg where not a single word of German is spoken.
It is true that German is difficult. However, it is not difficult to say things that any German will understand.
It will take many many years to master the language, but taking small steps is absolutely fine and every German person will appreciate your effort, even if grammar is not perfect.

The German language is one of the most difficult I know. There are much more rules, irregular verbs and things like that. For example the article:
Der bestimmte Artikel
Kasus
männlich weiblich sächlich Plural
Nominativ
der die das die
Genitiv
des der des der
Dativ
dem der dem den
Akkusativ
den die das die
Der unbestimmte Artikel
Kasus
männlich weiblich sächlich Plural
Nominativ
ein eine ein –
Genitiv
eines einer eines –
Dativ
einem einer einem –
Akkusativ
einen eine ein
The sentences are longer. You make more commas. But don´t be afraid. The most German don´t know it ether. :)
It is not easy to learn, but it is a good language. But if you want to have a use with languages have look about the world languages.

Apart from the already mentioned grammatical cases, one difference between English and German is the use of Konjunktive verb forms. These are different forms for a situation in which the verb expresses a certain fact, of in which the verb expresses an opinion, or what someone has said. It's comparable to Spanish. If you want to learn a language more closely related to English though, you could study Dutch. It is a sort of German without grammatical cases and without the Konjunktive verb forms. Hence in that sense Dutch is a little more similar to English than German.
