What are the nuances between 根据、依照、and 根据？

I have a book, "The Commercial Press Guide to Learning Chinese Synonyms" which I consult often whenever doubts regarding the use of closely related synonyms arise. Nevertheless, sometimes I find the explanations a bit befuddling.

It says: 都是介词，引出行为的标准或依据。跟：法律、规定、经验、方案" 等词搭配是，经常可以互换：

For example, all of them would work fine in a sentence such as this:

按照（依照、根据）学校的规定，你们每学期必须选修两门课。

Here is what they differ, according to the book:

"依照" / "按照" 就是把A作为标准、照着A的要求做
"根据" 就是把A作为基础，在这个基础上在做某市或得到某个结论

Can someone explain, using English preferably if possible, what the above means? I don't quite get it.

In the following sentence, only 根据 can be used out of the bunch.

这部电视剧是根据古典小说 "红楼梦" 改编的。Is this due to emphasizing "to be based on" rather than "according to something?"

Furthermore, it says: 当后面所引人的是顺序、时间、期限、比例、范围等方面的次于是，多用"按照"、"依照"，不能用"根据":

For example, 这篇文章是按照时间顺序协作的。（不可以用根据）

If someone could explain that, again in English preferably, I'd be most grateful.

LASTLY, because I have a few of these synonym books, I've found that sometimes they contradict each other. For example, in the sentence below, one book says 根据 is preferable while another says 按照 is:

根据/按照天气预报，明天会下雨的。

1. When these three words are followed by nouns such as 法律、规定、经验、方案, they are interchangeable. Following the example u put up here "按照（依照、根据）学校的规定，你们每学期必须选修两门课", you are explaining or quoting what the school's rules say about registering for electives. No conclusions or implications are being drawn or made here. They're the equivalent of "according to" under this circumstance.

2. "依照" / "按照" 就是把A作为标准、照着A的要求做 - You do something following the rule/requiremnet/ order/ standard of A

"根据" 就是把A作为基础，在这个基础上在做某市或得到某个结论 - It describes the relationship between the two statements of a conditional statement A, called the antecedent and B called the consequent when A implies B or statement B can be drawn based on A.

这部电视剧是根据古典小说 "红楼梦" 改编的: This sentence is emphasizing "to be based on" because 这部电视剧 is an adaption of 古典小说红楼梦。The show is not explaining 古典小说红楼梦 nor following the order/requirement/order of 红楼梦.

3. Furthermore, it says: 当后面所引人的是顺序、时间、期限、比例、范围等方面的次于是，多用"按照"、"依照"，不能用"根据". - This entry is oversimplifying. Again if you are trying to interpret or quote something (according to something), there is no such difference in usage. If it is following the order/rule/requirement of something, then 按照／依照would make more sense in the sentence。这篇文章是按照时间顺序协作的。（不可以用根据）－ The article follows a chronological order.

4. one book says 根据 is preferable while another says 按照 is: 根据/按照 天气预报，明天会下雨的。This one is a bit of tricky as both are acceptable in the context but I'd go with 根据 as u‘re quoting or interpreting the weather forecast。

Sometimes, the meaning of "根据" is same to "按照". However, 按照 is more inclined to followed other's suggestion, you needn't have your own opinion. For example, 按照the leader's order, or 按照some situation, season, time, and so on. In this way, 依照 and 按照 is identical in meaning. 根据 is you have your own judgement on something or other's thought. It's inclined to theory, conclusion and truth. The weather forecast is always viewed to correct, however, it's wrong sometimes of course. So, for the weather forecast we can say 按照 or 根据.

Liamli回答的很深刻，i think you can use them by this simple regulation：
when the situation “照”is used,it meas very easy and you don't need to use brain too much,just quote it ,like laws,you may image that you are taking a picture,find a postion and press the button,that's ok;
meanwhile,when"据"is used,it means a little complicate, you need to consider it much more,extent and develop on the base(as the novel 红楼梦),you can image that you are drawing a picture,and you must put your idea in your product.

你写的好多啊。。。。原来汉语和英语一样复杂啊。。。
其实可以这样区分：
1.当句子有法律/经验/规定时：按照=根据
2.根据嘛，肯定要有“根”的，也就是要有基础/前提。这时不能用“按照”。如：这个电影是根据一个民间故事改编的。（这个电影的基础就是民间故事。）
3.按照，指按照法律/说法。可以省写为“按”。如：按我说的做！按（照）一般情况，我是不会这么做的。

呵呵，其实如果不做试卷的话，只是交流，能明白意思就行。
