The word "marry" is a verb.
It can be expressed in various present/past/future tenses:
infinitive - marry
past - married
continuous - marrying
However, we commonly use the past tenses of words as adjectives and the continuous tenses of words as nouns:
That couple is married. (the word "married is used as an adjective to describe the couple)
Marrying too young can ruin your life. (Here, the word "marrying" is used as a noun).
With adjectives you are describing a state of being. I this case you are describing a state of marriage. You are either married or you are not. However, there are stages to these states.
The non-active state:
I am not married.
The pre-active state:
Am going to be married.
I will be married.
I am going to get married.
The activation state:
I am getting married
The active state:
I am married
The post active:
I was married.
You can use any of these stages for almost any adjectives that describe states of being.
The non-active state:
I am not drunk.
The pre-active state:
Am going to be drunk.
I will be drunk.
I am going to get drunk.
The activation state:
I am getting drunk
The active state:
I am drunk
The post-active state:
I was drunk.
Sometimes, the state of "drunk" ends up in the state of "married" so be very careful, especially in Las Vegas.

Hello Cozy. In French, we have the same problem. Not easy to use this express. One of my English teacher told us one day. It is very strange to see French people always making a mistake with this expression. 再见。

Well, "get marry" is wrong, so you'll never use that. :)
"Get married" means you go from unmarried to married, and refers to the time of the wedding.
"Be married" is someone's status after their marriage (until divorce or death, of course).

If you are going to have a wedding ceremony and become the wife of someone, you could say:
I will get married to <him>.
I will be married to <him>.
I will marry <him>
'Get marry' is wrong.
Once the ceremony is over, you can say "I am married to <him>"
If you say "I was married to <him> in January", you are saying that the ceremony in which you got married was in January.
If you just say "I was married to <him>", you would be understood to be saying that you WERE married, but are not married to him any longer.
