The nearest-run According to Wellington, the battle was "the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life. What does mean "the nearest-run"?

I agree with fdmaxey that it means that the battle could have been won by either side. In this case Wellington or Napoleon could have won because they both fought well.

It means the battle was very close and could have been won by either side.

According to thefreedictionary.com run as a noun could mean: A campaign for public office. I think this is what it means in this sentence
