The number of years doesn’t say much about a person’s English ability. If the learning methods are wrong, doing more of them are only going to bring more frustration and making one become less interested in English. I think one major problem with many Asian learners is that many of them learn English passively. It is not unusual to find students in class busy taking notes from the board and sitting in their chairs passively watching the teacher performing on stage the entire class period. Most teachers don’t require students’ active involvement and students are used to just sit there, listen and take notes. The only instance the students would speak would be to recite a passage from the book or to repeat after the teacher like parrots. The truth is that there is no such thing as passive learning. If the school is the breeding ground for passive learners/zombies, you would have to look elsewhere to learn. If you can, I suggest that you take regular classes from an experienced italki tutor/teacher or you can find a language exchange partner who is also interested in learning Chinese. Good luck.

Learning English can be difficult. I suggest reading as many books in English as you can and also watching movies and television shows in English. Of course, the best way to learn is to constantly communicate with another person via text message or email. That way you are talking to each other every day and constantly reviewing and using what you have learned. Hope this helps!
