"Make" is used when you are creating something. You would use this in building and cooking, for example. To "make" a shirt is to turn fabric into clothing. To "make" dinner is to turn food into a meal. To "make" a table is to turn wood into furniture. The word "do" is used for other actions that don't involve creating. So when I say "I'm going to do the dishes" I mean that I am going to clean the dishes. If I said "make" here, the meaning changes completely, and I seem like I am going to CREATE dishes.
