The second one doesn't work. It doesn't give enough information. You need to say 'could do it/this/that' to make the written sentence meaningful.

#1 is right. #2 isn't right without the "could do it" or "could get a degree" in the second sentence.

The first one is better. Notice there is a period and with "alternatively" you started a new sentence. "It" works as a subject. Jola
