How would one compose the address of a letter to China?
Positioning of street, prefecture, postal code, city, etc. but also whether or not it would be better to romanize with pinyin (since I don't think the mailmen will do much with Chinese characters). Thank you advance! Also, if someone could give an example of what the addressing would look like, that would be great! :)

Hi there. The Chinese write from large to small. So start with China...then work your way down to the street and exact address. I would assume your country will know where to send it if you start address with China in big capital letters. As for the address, most towns seem to have unified Latin script names...so just go with those. Else just ask whom you are sending it to. I have never mailed anything myself....so this is just a rough idea of form. J.

It's ok to write the address in English, you don't need to write it in pinyin.
And usually you should add post code after the city(Shanghai, Beijing, Shenyang, etc.). You should also add district in front of city, because there might be two streets or roads with same name in one city.
There are few major cities in China which are independent from any province, like Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, etc. When you write address to those cities, you don't add province after city, but if you write to other cities, like Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, etc, you should add province after city, like Hangzhou(post code), Zhejiang Province.
Hope this answer your question.
