You wouldn't write out the numbers for a date, unless it was at the start of a sentence, where you can't use numerals. So, "Nineteen hundred and six was a very good year for my grandmother."

As a date you could say "nineteen six." Some people might say "nineteen oh six," but you are usually not going to write a number that large in words.
