vieux vs ancien
My french lessons make me understand that there is a difference for the uses of "vieux" and "ancienne" but I don't get when should I use one and when the other, according to the lesson the sentences after the text in Spanish are correct but I can't swap "vieux" and "ancien". Is there an explanation for this or some kind of rule?
En mis lecciones de francés se me da a entender que debo distinguir cuando usar "vieux" y cuando usar "ancien" poniendome las siguientes oraciones como correctas:
"Ce parapluie est vieux"
"Le livre est ancien"
"La chise est vieille"
"La maison blanche est ancienne"
Pero si intercambio 'vieux' por 'ancien' o 'vieille' por 'ancienne' aparecen incorrectas, ¿hay alguna explicación?

Ce sont presque des synonymes.
Mais il existe une nuance : ancien ajoute une une connotation de temps passé, d'époque révolue.
« la maison est ancienne » : maison construite il y a longtemps
« la maison est vieille » : maison abîmée, usée (presque péjoratif).
« un vieux copain » : c'est un copain depuis longtemps
« un ancien copain » : c'était un copain, avant.
« Une vieille personne » : ok
« Une personne ancienne » : ne se dit pas
Je ne trouve pas d'autre explication. Je pense que ce point de détail s'apprend à l'usage.

Benoît answer seems to be the most accurate for now.
It's quite a tricky question, but what you have to remember is:
- vieux, vieille est plus péjoratif en général
- quelqu'un est vieux mais pas ancien, mais quelque chose peut être l'un ou l'autre
And, last but not least:
"C'est mon ancien parapluie" = I do not use it anymore, BUT "c'est un parapluie ancien" = it's an old umbrella...

Si tu parles un peu anglais, je dirai que les traductions les plus proches sont:
- vieux = old
- ancien = former

"Le parapluie est vieux" --> Cela fait longtemps que je l'utilise.
" C'est mon ancien parapluie" --> Je ne l'utilise plus.
