Are there different ways to say "I know" in Japanese? In spanish there is more than one version of the english verb "to know" (saber, conocer, etc.). Is there more than one way to say it in Japanese? For Spanish "saber" is for to know a fact or skill, "conocer" is for to a person or place (things like that). Is there anything along these lines?

Correct, 分かる is more or less "understand" and 知る is more like "knowing" A common reply when being told something, esp a direction is 「分かりました」, or "Understood." But to answer your question, I 「Thatを知っていた」 would be a way of literally saying "I knew that"

I don't actually know that mush spanish ._. I only took 2 years in high school, but I asked google translate and from what I can gather 分かる is to know something/ understand something. 知る can be to know a fact/ to be familiar, right?
