What do you call a person who mends chairs in Persian ? In France, there used to be people whose job it was to mend straw chairs (I mean chairs whose body is made of wood but whose seat is made of straw). There are still a few of these people today, though straw chairs are not so popular anymore. We call them rempailleur (or, for a woman, rempailleuse). Anyway, my question is, do you have (or did you use to have) this job in Iran, and if so what is its name ? I'm having trouble figuring this out on my own because I don't even know if there's a word in English, and most of the dictionaries I have are English/Persian.

We don't have a job like that. But generally when we want to call someone whose job is making something and there is no word for their job, we add "ساز" to that thing. In your case we can say صندلی ساز. مبل ساز .... آهنگ ساز ..... در و پنجره ساز If their job is to mend something we use the word "تعمیر کار" . تعمیر کار صندلی ... تعمیر کارکامپیوتر .... تعمیر کار لوازم برقی

Anyone who is deal with wood is a "Carpenter" and we call it "نجار". If he/she is using kind of other materials like metal but still the wood is the main material, he/she is a carpenter. Anyway I have some great materials for learning Farsi like some of the best and simple magazines for different levels (complete archives), audio stories with English/Farsi transcripts, books, movies and etc. If you are interested just gimme a buzz.
