Would 'a surprise' be wrong in this sentence instead of 'surprise'?

No, because you can't say "no a surprise". You could say "it should not be a surprise."

You can't put -a- after -no -
So the right sentence is ( it should be no surprise )
If you want to use - a - you can say
( it shouldn't be a surprise )
