I don't get this phrase well. Would you explain this, please?

It means that everybody thinks their problems are horrible and the worst. If we all threw our problems into a pile, and pulled out a new one belonging to someone else, we would see that other people have worse problems than we have, so we would rather take back our own, rather than having someone else's which may be far worse.
