The new position was declared in a friend-of-the-court brief filed by the Department of Justice late Friday in a case involving two human genes linked to breast and ovarian cancer.....in this sentence what is the meaning of late Friday? Does It mean the most recent Friday? or late night of Friday?

It is a combination of both of these - late in the day of the most recent Friday.

Usually you will only see this in news reports. It is rare for people to say "late Friday" in spoken English.
