How would you understand this sentence in this context?
Hi,
I was reading an article from Business Insider and I came across this sentence:
" While the quote above rings true, I’d add that the difference between the best things and the second best things is far, far greater than the difference between the second best things and the twentieth best things. It’s not a linear scale."

I don't get the idea of the writer. Could anyone please explain that sentence to me? Thank you very much!

He means that the "best things" are much better than all the other things. The second-best things are not much better than the twentieth-best things. The distance between the best things and the second-best things is very big.
