How do you pronounce long vowels and short vowels? I've already known the difference between the "ea" in "seat" and "i" in "sit". What about the followings? How should I pronounce them? They sound quite similar to me. "lord" and "lot" "up" and "are" "soup" and "put" Thanks!!!

"lord" = long (both sides of the Atlantic Ocean) "lot" = short (Britain), long (USA) "up" = short (both sides) "are" = long (strong form), short (weak form) (both sides) "soup" = long (both sides) "put" = short (both sides) Australia, New Zealand and South Africa: I don't know. Also, I don't know whether Canadians' pronunciation is the same as Americans'. (Well, Canadians are Americans too, but when people make this kind of synecdoche (the whole for one of its parts) using words like 'America' or 'Americans', they usually refer to the U.S.).
