Spanish "G" Sound ?
What are the rules in Spanish that govern when the "G" makes an English G sound as in "Go" or an English H sound as in "How".
For example:
Legitimar (H sound) vs Negocio (G sound) or at the beginning of words such as General (H Sound) or Ganador (G sound).

when u have g followed by u+vowel e or i like in the words, guirnalda, guiso, guerra, guitarra, it sounds like the english G in the word Gold, Glottal, Government.
whenever u have g followed by i or e it is going to sound like a J, strong J, like in the words gitano, gelatina, genoma, gesto. (u know how ppl from Liverpool pronounce letters Ck, well it's the same sound, JJJJJJJJJJJJJJ.
whenever u have g followed by a, o, or u, it is going to sound like English G in the word go, or ghost. For instance, gusto, gubernamental, gol, gótico, gastar, galardón.
ofc u r going to find exceptions, right now i can't think any off the top of my head, sorry xD.
Hope this helps u. Best regards

The soft sound of G is, like our partners said, like 'g' in 'got'.
But G is NEVER silent. Indeed, G before 'e' or 'i' sounds stronger than before 'a', 'o' ,'u'. It sounds stronger than 'h' in 'hot', because you must add a vibration in your throat. It is exactly the same sound that J, at least in Spain.
In this podcast (https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/jpinotir/episodes/2016-09-30T12_15_04-07_00) you have two examples in the words 'gerente' and 'gimnasio'.
It's the same sound that the J in 'caja', 'equipaje'.

These are my notes, hope they are useful:
g + a, o, u gu + e, i gato, guerra, agua, jugar,juguete : It sounds like ‘g’ in ‘got’
You do not pronounce the letter’u’. Only if you have diareseis as pingüinos
g + e,i general, gimnasio,imagen, página: It sounds like ‘h’ in ‘hot’

when 'g' comes before the vowels a,o,u will sound like the g in gate, it will not sound like 'h' as the silent sound
eg. gato, gordo, gusto
however, if 'g' comes before the vowels e or i, then it will produce a silent sound
eg. general, gimnasio
ofc there are some exceptions but im not sure about that yet, hope that helps a bit :D
