Fat chance is sarcastic, while slim chance is not

It doesn't really make sense, but here is my take on it. Fat chance means that there's a BIG chance it won't work out. Slim chance means that there's a very small possibility it will work out. Usually, "fat chance" is used sarcastically. You wouldn't say there's a fat chance of something happening to your boss -- it is more slang. Did that help?
