and what does it mean exactly ?

As far as I know there is no hidden meaning in this. What I understand is that the subject "he" is physically moving his head to a crack somewhere and looking into it. It's almost like he is placing his eye on the crack to look into it.
More context might possibly make this clearer, but hopefully this helps!
