how can I learn phonetic symbols well? who can tell me how can i learn phonetic symbols well ? i just want to pronounce words well,so i must learn phonetic symbols well but now i am not sure whether my pronunciation is right ! for example , "defend" should be pronounced [di'fend] ,but how can i get the right pronunciation of [d] [i] [f] [e] [n]? is there any website or books?

unfortunately some words are an exception to the rule but try this dictionary site http://dictionary.reference.com/ you can type in the word and listen to it's pronunciation, hope it helps.
