Should I use "they/them/their" in the meaning of "he/she/him//his/her"?
I often see people using "They/them/their" in situations where they definitely mean only one person, e.g. in sentences like "If somebody asks you ..., tell them ....". Is it a norm in modern English or it may be used in certain circumstances only? When should I use this form (if I ever should)?

Yes, it's very normal, especially when you don't know who it is (eg: 'someone sent a message, theay want you to..')
It's just for convenience because otherwise we would have to say "he or she" all the time!
