Die Herausforderung, die Challenge oder der Challenge I know the German word for “challenge” is Herausforderung (die), but once I was told that it’s not applicable for internet challenges we do for fun, as they’re more like a game (not a real challenge), and the English counterpart would be the best option. However, more than once, the word “Challenge” has been replaced in my texts. When it’s not replaced, there’s a problem about the gender. I usually say “die Challenge” because of "die Herausforderung". However, I was told that “Challenge” is mostly used as a masculine word (der Challenge). Sill, when I tried, I got a correction saying it’s a feminine word. I love this kind of challenge and intend to keep practising my German with them... so how do I refer to them? Help, please!

As a German I would always try to find a suitable German word, after all there are quite a few. However, can you give some examples with context when you were told to use die Challenge and der Challenge? It might be easier then to find an explanation for this and maybe even suitable German synonyms.

As native german speaker I would say die Challenge and I don`t remember anyone who used it as a masculine word. But since it`s a foreign word, I think it`s possible we germans didn`t come to a agreement yet and some use der Challenge instead. I would stick to die Challenge.

Especially with new words often being English in origin there are different opinions regarding its gender. Moreover there are at times different articles used in German and Austrian standard German. der / die Cola.

Thanks, guys! As I already suspected, it seems there’s not a definite answer haha I assume I will have to accept the fact that I will be constantly corrected. That’s life!
