I’ve never heard of a mating drum.  It may be a a word invented for comic effect because it suggests a sort of drum that a remote tribe might use during a mating ritual of some kind.   The sentence is much funnier by including the adjective “mating”.

I actually had to google this, mating has 2 meanings:

1) Bringing two animals to breed/mate reproduce together

2) Connect mechanically so for example: "the four-cylinder engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox"

Over here it would simply mean that he will connect his skin layer to create drum.
