Peel chop devil here are My questions: (the scripts are below in comment section) 1. why when Monica screams and pushes everybody to hurry up with the preparation, chandler says she should have “german subtitles”? what does it have to do with Germans and subtitles? 2. why monica thinks phoebe wants her to cry? why phoebe calls her “Sir” in a kind of “soldier answers their officer” way? 3. what does “give my away” here mean? 4. I know the expression “to hell with them”, does “the hell with them” have the same meaning? 5. “back on” means “back on schedule?” 6. Both “peel” and “chop” are ways in cooking, what about “devil”, I don’t think it has anything to do with the cooking, does it? here comes the scripts....

1. Monica is being very bossy, like a military commander. Americans associate the German language with militarism and bossiness. So, I think that is the joke. A related joke would be to say “Monica, stop being such a Nazi” which means “stop being so bossy.” 2. Monica made the remark about crying because she is emotionally fragile at the time, and so it bothers her when Phoebe asks a question that suggests the Monica did not plan things well. The “sir, no sir” response relates to the idea of Monica being bossy like a military commander. 3. At a wedding in the US, it is customary for somebody (usually the bride’s father) to “give her away” to the groom. This reflects an old-fashioned idea that the woman is moving from the protection (control?) of her father to the protection (control?) of her husband. The custom is becoming less common because this idea is no longer the way most people think, but the practice of “giving away the bride” is still followed in many weddings because it is traditional. 4. Yes. 5. “Back on” means that something that was canceled or tentatively canceled is again on schedule. Example: “We had to cancel the picnic because we thought it was going to rain. But the whether turned out beautiful, so the picnic is back on.” 6. “Devil” is a way of preparing eggs. Hard boiled eggs are cut in half. The yolk (the yellow part) is whipped up into a soft texture, and spices are added, then the yolk is put back into the egg half. Deviled eggs are served as an appetizer.

Cute script. 1. why when Monica screams and pushes everybody to hurry up with the preparation, chandler says she should have “german subtitles”? what does it have to do with Germans and subtitles? After World War II, there were a number of American movies that showed stereotypes of German army officers with time-obsessed and bossy behaviour. - We've only got 12 hours and 36 minutes left. (time-obsessed - Not "12 hours" but "12 hours and 36 minutes") - Move, move, move! (bossy, inappropriate in most situations) 2a. why monica thinks phoebe wants her to cry? Monica means "why are you reminding me of this impossible situation ... I should cry because it is impossible." 2b. why phoebe calls her “Sir” in a kind of “soldier answers their officer” way? She calls her sir as a reinforcement of Monica's bossy army officer image. 3. what does “give me away” here mean? Traditionally at weddings, the father of the bride "gives" her away to her new husband (to indicate that she is leaving her parents' home and going to her husband's home). 4. I know the expression “to hell with them”, does “the hell with them” have the same meaning? Yes 5. “back on” means “back on schedule?” No - It means back on plan. The wedding "is off" (cancelled). The wedding "is back on" (not cancelled). 6. Both “peel” and “chop” are ways in cooking, what about “devil”, I don’t think it has anything to do with the cooking, does it? Here, devil indicates anger and frustration and it is a polite replacement for swear words (s***, f***, and damn) that aren't normally said on shows for the general public. Note the reference to the lost two minutes (more of the time-obsessed German army officer stereotype).

Scene: Monica’s preparing food for her brother Ross’s ex-wife Carol’s wedding. MONICA: All right people, we're in trouble here. We've only got 12 hours and 36 minutes left. Move, move, move! CHANDLER: Monica, I feel like you should 【have German subtitles】. PHOEBE: Monica, how did this happen? I thought you had this all planned out. MONICA: 【Do you want me to cry? Is that what you want? Do you wanna see me cry?】 PHOEBE: 【Sir! No sir!】 [knock at the door] MONICA: Hi. CAROL: How's it going? MONICA: It's goin' great. Right on schedule. Got my little happy helpers.[everyone groans] CAROL: I think we're calling off the wedding. My parents called this afternoon to say they weren't coming. ROSS: Oh my god. CAROL: I mean, I knew they were having trouble with this whole thing, but they're my parents. They're supposed to 【give me away】 and everything. ROSS: Look, do you love Susan? CAROL: Of course I do. ROSS: Well then that's it. And if George and Adelaide can't accept that, then 【the hell with them】. Look, if my parents didn't want me to marry you, no way that would have stopped me. Look, this is your wedding. Do it. CAROL: You're right. Of course you're right. MONICA: 【So we're back on】? CAROL: 【We're back on】. MONICA: You heard the woman. Peel! chop!【devil】! I can't believe I lost 2 minutes. thanks very much for your kind reply
