探す and 見つける are almost the same meaning (as present tense).
But, 探した and 見つけた (past tense) aren't the same.
探した's example.
Aさん:鍵を探した I tried to find the keys.
Bさん:見つけた? Did you find them?
Aさん:見つけられなかったよ I couldn't find them.
見つけた's example.
Aさん:鍵を見つけた I found the keys.
Bさん:よかったね Good for you!
探す's example.
Aさん:あの本を探すの? Are you looking for that book?
Bさん:探さない。 No, I'm not.
見つける's example.
Aさん:あの本を見つけるの? Are you looking for that book?
Bさん:見つけない。No, I'm not.
