I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend some programmes/series in Mandarin? To give you an idea of my tastes. the below are some of the films I like:

Farewell My Concubine (1993) 霸王别姬 Bà Wáng Bié Jī - Drama - (set largely during the Cultural Revolution)
To Live (1994) 活着 Huózhe - Drama - PRC (set during pre-Communist China to Cultural Revolution)
Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014) 白日焰火 Báirì Yànhuǒ - Crime/Thriller
Ash Is Purest White (2018) 江湖儿女 jiānghú érnǚ - Crime/Thriller
If You Are the One (2008) 非诚勿扰 Fēichéng Wùrǎo - Drama/Comedy
I am Not Madame Bovary (2016) 我不是潘金莲 Wǒ Búshì Pān Jīnlián - Drama

如果你想看电视剧可以先去了解四大名著，水浒传，三国演义，红楼梦，西游记，如果想看电影可以去看流浪地球，这些在中国有很多人喜欢

Maybe you can post your question on Douban. I'm sure you'll get a lot of good replies. Here is a list of Top 100 excellent films from China. Thanks Juan. I use douban for films, but television shows seem to be dominated by romantic stories, period dramas or Korean soaps! I'll take a look at 《钢的琴》and《让子弹飞》
