When do you use 以及 (yiji) instead of 而且 (erqie) or 和 (he) I believe yi3ji2 以及 means something like -- and / as well as. Is this 书面语? Do people use this in 口语? Can you give a few examples of when to use it? Why not just use 和 ?

Ms. Yunpaipai has given a very proper explanation. I will just give you some other examples. 1.以及:seldom used in oral dialogue, but often appears as 书面语 in essays or speeches to show solemnness and seriousness. For instance, it often show up in news reports. The phrase "A 以及 B" refers that "B is subordinate to A" usually or "B and A are treated on an equal footing" sometimes. 2.和:most common phrase for "and", often appears in oral or written form. It means the one before and after "和" are on an equal footing. Besides, when you say "you and I", you should say "我和你" instead, as the order of person in Chinese is different from that in English. 3.而且:different meaning from 以及 and 和, which means "moreover" or "in addition". For instance, “这座桥坚固而且美观” refers that "the bridge is stable; moreover, it's beautiful". The phrase "而且" strengthen the emotion and function of the sentence.

1.以及 表示并列同等的意思。Example:“我代表我的家人以及我的朋友祝你愉快!” 2.而且 表示递进,也是最常用的表示递进含义的词语。Example:“你不但聪明,而且还很幽默。” 3.和 有很多种意思,也有很多种用法,根据你前两个词性来判断,你想知道的应该是 连词,Example:“我和老师打球。” 对不起,我的英文不好 只能讲这些了。

In Chinese, “而且”do not equal to "instead of" Instead of means you take one out of two options, but "而且" means both. 以及, is more formal to me, we use "和" a lot in our daily life.
