A 'sadist' is a person who gets pleasure from hurting others and from being cruel to them.
On the contrary, a 'masochist' is a person who gets pleasure from being hurt.
It can also be used informally when talking about a person who enjoys being in unpleasant situations.

a "masochist" is pleasured of receiving punishment, abused by others and even enjoy pain, while a 'sadist' is pleasured in giving or inflicting pain on others (that usually experiencing sexual excitement).
