Is Romaji Common? Is it common for Japanese people (especially on language sites like Italki) to understand Romaji? I want to start learning spoken Japanese, but I don't think I'm ready to start learning the three written systems.

I don't recommend Romaji at all, you want to learn Japanese, aren't you ? so learn it in Japanese not in English, remember that Romaji is just an approximation of the Japanese pronunciation, so the only use of it is when you want to learn Kana for the first time, you don't have to learn Kanji now but at least you MUST learn Kana (hiragana & katakana) and it's not really that hard, you can memorize 5 letters per day and then you can finish both of them in just 16 days ! , I did so and it really worked very well. Believe me, a new world of the Japanese language will be opened in front of you then. Here are some useful links (that i used to learn kana) : Hiragana Workbook : http://hishamu.googlepages.com/hiragana.pdf Katakana workbook : http://hishamu.googlepages.com/katakana.pdf How to write Kana (animated) : http://www.ogurano.net/hishamu/kana.rar How to read Kana (press on the letter to hear its pronunciation): Hiragana: http://www.hellonavi.com/foldera/html/hassei/hassei01.html Katakana: http://www.hellonavi.com/foldera/html/hassei/hassei04.html

From the point of view of somebody who has done it, I would suggest forgetting about romaji and just going straight into kana. You will be thankful for it later.
